Gary grew up in the small town of Henderson, Kentucky where he lived with his parents and four siblings in a housing project in his early
childhood. After excelling as a top academic achiever and outstanding athlete in high school, Gary received an appointment to West Point where he graduated with a degree in Engineering. After serving five years in the US Army in Germany and at Ft Bliss, Texas, Gary left the military to work first as an engineer for Corning Glass Works and then as quality/operations manager for the General Electric Lighting Division. Gary is an innovative entrepreneur. He founded two businesses – an advertising agency and a successful nursing school and contributed to the growth of an international engineering development corporation. As an Executive Director for the Young Men’s Christian Association in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, and later at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in Danville, Virginia, Gary expanded the missions of the organizations he led. As Board Chair of two, child and family focused non-profits, Gary was responsible for their operation, growth, community impact, and capital campaigns. Through his leadership as Board Chair, both organizations met their goals and successfully completed planned building expansion projects on time and under budget while responding to the changing needs of the communities they served. In line with the 5th District, Gary considers himself a moderate pragmatic problem solver who wants government to work more efficiently. Rising from humble beginnings, Gary is grateful to the nation that allowed him to achieve so much. Today Gary is concerned about the direction and future of America. Currently there is an atmosphere of mistrust in Washington that is amplified by extremists unwilling to work towards solutions. Gary wants to work to make government more efficient, effective, cost conscience, and responsive to the needs of the residents of the 5th District. The people of Southside Virginia deserve a workhorse congressman who strives to bring home their fair share of the benefits good government provides. Gary wants to use the skills he developed in the military, private, and non-profit sectors as a problem solver who can reach across the aisle to guarantee the rights, freedoms, and benefits government can provide when we set aside our differences and agree that America should be one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.
