Biography: Monica Carpio was born in San Diego, California. She grew up in several U.S. States and in Latin America as her father was a U.S. diplomat and previous to that a multinational engineering executive. She speaks fluent Spanish and basic-level french and italian. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1993 and a graduate degree from Cornell University in 1995. Her experience includes being a federal government economist, stay-at-home mother, and political activist.

Why you? I am running for U.S. Congress because I love my country and feel that many Congress people who stay on for several terms lose sight of what brought them into office. Here in the 8th District we have problems with the quality of the public schools, traffic, pollution, increased cost of living, and a dearth of affordable housing. I am challenging incumbent Don Beyer, as I feel he is not doing a great job, despite his qualifications.

I believe I have the life experience necessary to bring accountability to Congress and a new perspective. I believe in the institution of marriage and families. We need to keep families strong. As a parent and former government employee, I feel qualified to work for the American people. I also have lived in many parts of the USA, not just Virginia or California, where I was born. I have lived in New York, Florida and Alabama. I respect and admire the regional cultural differences in our large and multi-ethnic nation.

What are your priorities?
Improving safety and hygiene at public schools. Making sure that appropriate candidates are promoted for school board. That includes making sure that all school board members are required to be parents themselves. I will also be proposing metal detectors at public schools

Making sure that Mr. Beyer’s initiatives as head of the Joint Economic Committee are reversed. Unlimited spending means higher taxes.

What is the most important thing Virginians need to know about you? I helped Governor Youngkin’s campaign because I believe he will fight for Virginia families, as will I.

How would your friends and family describe you?
Creative
Loving
Love being a mom

What are your thoughts on the Constitution as the Law of the Land? I revere the Constitution and think it should be honored.

What are your thoughts on religious liberty? I believe people have the right to express their religious ideas.

What are your thoughts on the preservation of our history? I think history should not be distorted in any way. There is much to learn from history. We can repeat the good and avoid the bad, I am glad to say that through my husband’s side of the family, our daughters are Children of the American Revolution (CAR).

What are your thought on government transparency? It is imperative. Government should use simple and straightforward language and keep public records on its employees and political appointees.

What are your thoughts on national defense? Should be kept as strong as possible to keep world peace.

What are your thoughts on the free enterprise system? As an economist, I believe the markets work best left alone, and government should be limited to maintaining order and public safety.

What are your thoughts on the protection of the unborn? I believe in rights for the unborn. With that being said, I think this issue has been very much distorted and sensationalized by the media.

What are your thoughts on the role the family plays in America? The family unit is what makes a nation strong. I sense a decline in family values. Friendships and work relationships are very important, as well as having a good relationship with oneself. However, strong family ties are necessary for a positive and caring community.

What are your thoughts on equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity, as opposed to equal outcomes? I believe people should be treated with respect. I believe in comparative advantage of individuals (some people are better at certain things), not in communism.

What are your thoughts on the 2nd Amendment? I respect people’s right to defend themselves. Especially in rural areas.
